An Interview with IdeaMensch
Where did the idea for FIT4MOM come from?
It was really one of those aha moments. I was on a stroller walk with my new baby and had this idea of creating a workout where moms workout with their strollers. I figured it made sense as all moms want to get back in to shape after baby. I was a fitness professional for 10 years at that time and knew I could help moms get fit. But the real truth was that those moms could help me with all of the questions that I had about motherhood. Being that I didn’t want to go back to work and leave my baby, Stroller Strides was the most incredible opportunity for me!
What does your typical day look like and how do you make it productive?
Well it’s changed a ton over the 16 years of running the business. I used to do it all. I was virtually the CEO, COO, CFO and CMO! I am now blessed to have an incredible team so that I can focus on my passion which is inspiring moms through my speaking and writing. I’m an early bird as I cherish starting the day in the quiet before my family wakes. I start each day with meditation and journaling. I have blocks throughout the day for email, social media, writing and projects. And of course time to work out and be with family!
How do you bring ideas to life?
Space! You need space to bring ideas to life. If you are too busy constantly doing, you have no room to dream or be creative. I make sure that I have space and quiet time each day. That’s where the ideas come from. To bring them to life, I come up with all of the steps that I can think of to make something happen. I calendar them out and make those dreams become reality.
What’s one trend that really excites you?
Well, I hope it’s not a trend, but I love seeing meditation become mainstream. There are so many benefits of meditation. Basically everyone I know is overwhelmed, stressed and feels a lack of focus. Meditation can help all of that and more!
What is one habit of yours that makes you more productive as an entrepreneur?
I would definitely say time blocking. Every single day, I prioritize my to do list. The day is set up in blocks so that I get done what’s most important rather than just what’s at the top of the list.
What advice would you give your younger self?
1) Slow down.
2) Delegate more. Do what only you can do!
Tell us something that’s true that almost nobody agrees with you on.
Easy. I tell everyone to take an unplugged day once a quarter. this is a day where you take off, unplug from technology and just do things that recharge you. pretty much everyone tells me that they don’t have time for it. I believe that it’s one of the most productive things you can do!
As an entrepreneur, what is the one thing you do over and over and recommend everyone else do?
Hire people who are better than you. If you really want to grow, you continue to hire people who know more than you do and will compliment your skill set.
What is one strategy that has helped you grow your business?
Dream big but don’t try to do it all (at once). My idea list has always been too long for a piece of paper. Our strategy has been to measure those ideas based on what will have biggest impact. We choose the ideas based on our resources and this impact. The other ideas are not thrown away but re-evaluated later.
What is one failure you had as an entrepreneur, and how did you overcome it?
Failure is a part of life so it’s hard to choose just one. One that stands out for me is when I had to let go of multiple employees because we grew too fast and the return on investment didn’t pan out. I felt terrible for letting them go. I overcame it by making sure that we had a better plan in place with clearly defined goals that needed to be hit for future hires.
What is one business idea that you’re willing to give away to our readers?
I love this question because I’m an idea monkey! As a mom entrepreneur with hundreds of franchisees (who are all moms), I want there to be co working spaces with child care, where moms can book out just a few hours to get work done.
What is the best $100 you recently spent? What and why?
I would have to say my new apple air pods. they are amazing ear buds that are wireless. I can use them for running but also being on the phone.
What is one piece of software or a web service that helps you be productive? How do you use it?
For years my answer would have been Evernote as I still use it every day. But today, I’ll say Trello. I use the boards to track everything from my to-do list to projects. I can make them private or share with the team.
What is the one book that you recommend our community should read and why?
I’m an avid reader. In fact, my goal this year is to read 50 new books. So it’s hard to pick just one. But I would say for entrepreneurs, it would be Essentialism by Greg McKeown. Most entrepreneurs try to do too much. Essentialism really taught me to focus on what’s most important and to have a bigger impact!
What is your favorite quote?
This has been on my desk for years by Katherine Center “Every single minute, of every single day, you are writing the story to your only life”
• If you really want to grow, continue to hire people who know more than you do and will compliment your skill set.
• Slow down. delegate more. Do what only you can do!
• Give yourself the space to be creative
• Focus your passions to make your dreams a reality.
• Never lose the quest for knowledge, and surround yourself with the people who inspire you the most.
